The soil laboratory is well equipped with precision equipments like Atomic absorption spectrophotometer, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Electronic balance , Water Purification Plant (Millipore), Macro & Micro-Kjeldahl assemblies, Digestion Chamber etc. Significant achievements have been made at the soil laboratory on assessment of soil health, identification of tree growth limiting factors of mined out and degraded forests areas of Jharkhand and West Bengal for their remediation. Apart from these, studies on Soil-Vegetation interrelationships, nutrient cycling under bamboos, natural forests and plantation ecosystems, tree nutrient assessment and optimization of fertilizer nutrient doses for common planted species have been accomplished. Special achievements have been made on ‘Assessment of Soil Carbon Stocks and Dynamics in Forest Soils of India under Land Use, Land-use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Sector of the NATCOM Project. A number of soil, litter, plant and water samples from FSI, SFDs, Jharkhand and West Bengal, NGOs, private entrepreneurs and farmers have been analyzed (for OC, litter DM, soil physico-chemical and nutritional parameters, quality control of fertilizers, bio-fertilizers, composts and vermicomposts etc.).
